Joel Schlessinger MD was part of a study to help establish the use of doxycycline tablets in treating the symptoms of rosacea
Dr. Joel Schlessinger was part of a 2008 study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology that helped to influence the treatment for symptoms of rosacea. In this active control study of 91 participants, each subject was given a daily dose of 40mg doxycycline tablets to treat rosacea. It was found that this dosage had the same efficacy as the standard dose of 100mg.

Doxycycline works to heal the symptoms of rosacea through anti-inflammatory mechanisms instead of through a direct antibacterial approach. The smaller dose of 40mg doxycycline tablets helped patients in two ways: it does not exercise an antibiotic effect on the patient and it does not build resistance. Also, with the smaller dose, it is better tolerated by the patient.

With such great results from this study performed by Dr. Joel Schlessinger and colleagues, it is expected that this data will soon influence the therapeutic approach for the symptoms of rosacea.
