Joel Schlessinger MD researches long-term treatments for severe acne vulgaris

While several short-term treatment regimens for severe acne vulgaris have been tested, few long-term severe acne treatment regimens have been investigated. This clinical study was outlined in the article, “Short-term combination therapy and long-term relapse prevention in the treatment of severe acne vulgaris,” published in the February 2012 issue of the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology. A recent study used two consecutive, controlled and double-blind studies to detail and evaluate the efficacy of nine-month regimens for severe acne vulgaris.

Dr. Schlessinger took part in this study along with seven other researchers. Over the nine months, four different severe acne treatment regimens were used and compared against one another.

Over the nine-month study, the regimens yielded results rated clear or almost clear with a large reduction in lesion count and subject satisfaction. All severe acne treatment regimens used were safe and tolerated by the test subjects.

Dr. Schlessinger believes this study concludes that both efficacious initial treatments along with a long-term acne-fighting regimen are important in the defeat of severe acne vulgaris. For severe acne patients, both short- and long-term regimens are important to keep the skin clear and healthy.
