Joel Schlessinger MD and his clinic at Skin Specialists P.C. of Omaha, Nebraska have been participating in an ongoing study involving the use of the antibody brodalumab for the use of treating patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. Phase 3 of the AMAGINE-2 study has just been completed, and they are pleased to announce that the results have been a great success!

The study involved more than 1,800 patients who were given brodalumab, a human antibody developed by leading pharmaceutical company, Amgen, for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Results showed that a significant number of patients achieved at least a 75% improvement in psoriasis severity by week 12. A large percentage of patients even achieved a complete recovery. When tested against a placebo and another leading drug, the brodalumab largely outperformed them both. As of November 2014, Amgen is preparing a plan to launch this new treatment option globally.

Plaque psoriasis is a common chronic autoimmune condition characterized by red, itchy patches of skin with silvery white scales. The patches form when skin cells receive a signal to produce new skin cells too quickly. The cells are unable to shed regularly, causing a dry, flaky buildup. Among the many causes of psoriasis are medication, heredity and trauma to the skin. The condition is reoccurring and often painful and embarrassing for those who struggle with it.

The AMAGINE-2 study far surpassed its endpoint goals, and Dr. Schlessinger and his staff are delighted to have participated in such a groundbreaking investigation for the future treatment of plaque psoriasis.
