Dr. Joel Schlessinger studies the long-term effects of botulinum toxin type A
Botulinum toxin type A has been proven to be a safe and effective one-time treatment for minimizing glabellar lines. Dr. Joel Schlessinger and colleagues administered a study to discover if repeated treatment of botulinum toxin type A has long-term efficacy and tolerability. This study, “The efficacy and safety of a new U.S. Botulinum toxin type A in the retreatment of glabellar lines following open-label treatment,” was published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology in May 2009.
Dr. Joel Schlessinger and his colleagues conducted this study to determine the long-term efficacy of repeated treatment with Botulinum toxin type A in the treatment of moderate to severe glabellar lines.
A randomized, double-blind study was conducted in 311 patients over the course of 23 months. Multiple treatments of Botulinum toxin type A were well-tolerated by a majority of patients and there was no sign of tachyphylaxis seen during the study.
Prior to this study, Dr. Joel Schlessinger also conducted research on the treatment and efficacy of abobotulinumtoxina in the treatment of glabellar lines. In this study, a majority of participants noticed significant improvement in glabellar lines within the first 24 hours. Read more about this study conducted by Dr. Joel Schlessinger here.
