Dr. Joel Schlessinger administers study on the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis with ketoconazole
Dr. Joel Schlessinger and colleagues administered a study featured in the Journal for Drugs in Dermatology titled “A novel foam formulation of ketoconazole 2% for the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis on multiple body regions.” This study was administered to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a twice-daily treatment for seborrheic dermatitis on the scalp, face and body.
Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition that causes flaky scales to form on oily areas of the body. It can cause the skin to appear inflamed and sensitive. This condition is chronic but it can be controlled with treatment. It is often characterized by inactive periods followed by flare-ups.
Over 1,160 subjects over the age of 12 with mild to severe seborrheic dermatitis were given ketoconazole foam, vehicle foam, ketoconazole cream or vehicle cream twice daily for four weeks. A significant improvement was seen in the patients that used the ketoconazole foam rather than the vehicle foam. The ketoconazole foam was well-tolerated with a low rate of adverse events. The cream showed the same results as the foam.
Dr. Joel Schlessinger concluded that this foam formulation is safe and effective for use on the body, scalp and face for those over the age of 12.
