Dr. Joel Schlessinger administers demographic study of cosmetic surgery patients
Dr. Joel Schlessinger, along with his son Daniel and his father Bernard, conducted a study on the demographics of cosmetic surgery patients. “Prospective Demographic Study of Cosmetic Surgery Patients” was published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology in November 2010.
As a board certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Joel Schlessinger sought to examine data to analyze any significant correlations that may shed light on a common thread between cosmetic surgery patients.
The study was conducted in a nonacademic, private practice in the Midwest. Approximately 366 patients participated in the study. The demographic of patients who received neurotoxins, fillers and laser hair removal were studied.
After analyzing the data, it was found that of the cosmetic surgery patients that receive neurotoxins, fillers or laser hair removal:
- 67.5% are married
- 66.9% are college-educated or greater
- 74.3% are employed
- 74.5% are mothers
It was concluded that data in this study showed correlations with data norms found in the Census, such as marital status and motherhood categories. For future research, Dr. Joel Schlessinger says that the motivations of individuals undergoing cosmetic surgery should be studied for further analysis.
